Clarification on DMEPOS Accreditation Requirements Accreditation is the process by which an organization is authorized and credentialed. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires Durable Medical Equipment Prosthetics Orthotics and Supplies (DMEPOS) Medicare suppliers to attain accreditation to ensure industry standards are met and to maintain high levels of excellence in service and supplies. Currently, there seems to be some confusion on which groups are exempt. Those suppliers exempt from accreditation are: Suppliers providing drug and pharmaceuticals onlyPhysicians, including dentistsAudiologistOptometristsOrthotistsProsthetists, including occularistsOpticiansOccupational TherapistPhysical Therapists Exempt suppliers are reminded that accreditation exemptions only extend to the normal scope of services for the supplier specialty. Any products or services provided outside the normal range of services will require accreditation to obtain/maintain Medicare billing privileges. If the supplier type is combined with another that requires accreditation/surety bond, they are no longer exempt. Here are some examples to assist with the information provided above: A physician dispenses DME to a beneficiary as part of their treatment and bills the Part B contractor - the physician is exempt.A physician has a private practice and works in a hospital outpatient setting (Critical Access Hospital [CAH} or the Emergency Department [ED] in an Acute Care Hospital) ordering and dispensing DMEPOS items and the hospital bills the DME MACs – the physician is exempt but the hospital is not and the hospital must obtain accreditation.A physician owns a DME supply company – the DME supply company has to obtain accreditation. For more information on accreditation visit the National Supplier Clearinghouse (NSC) Web site at: http://www.palmettogba.com/nsc The CMS Web site also provides information on accreditation, including accreditation requirements, a list of the accreditation organizations and guidance regarding the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 (MIPPA) for DMEPOS suppliers. This information can be found on the CMS Web site at: http://www.cms.gov/MedicareProviderSupEnroll/07_DMEPOSAccreditation.asp.
